The Story Behind

Our mission is to be part of your journey and a gentle reminder that there is hope once you find yourself at the intersection of scared and hopeful.

When we found out at 26 weeks pregnant that our son would need open heart surgery at birth, I immediately started researching empowering children's characters with scars, but soon realized it’s usually villains who have scars. I decided my son and children like him deserve better. Thus Badges and For Little Heroes were born, intended to be sources of empowerment and reassurance for children and families in similar situations.

The H in "Heroes" and B in "Badges" have a special meaning behind them. The stick in each letter represent my son's     5-inch scar, and the 3 dots below are his scars from the post-surgical tubes.   Thus, our inspiration will remain ingrained in everything we do.

Carter has had 14 heart surgeries, and is nothing short of a champion!  Over 1.5 million people reminded him that badges aren't ugly....and we agree! He has lots of badges of different sizes, shapes and colors...but they all mean one thing....he's a hero and you are also!

Some of our heroes...
CARTER, 9
(CHD)

Carter has had 14 heart surgeries, and is nothing short of a champion!  Over 1.5 million people reminded him that badges aren't ugly....and we agree! He has lots of badges of different sizes, shapes and colors...but they all mean one thing....he's a hero and you are also!

Eli rocks a 5-inch badge on his chest, 3 small badges beneath his incision and 3 little badges on his neck from his open heart surgery. They are all different shapes and sizes, but they're proof that he's a hero....and so are you!

ELI, 3
(CHD)
WILLIAM, 2
(CLEFT PALATE & LIP)

William has a badge on his top lip from his surgeries to repair a cleft palate and lip. His badge is on his face so everyone can see it, and it's proof that he's a hero....just like you!

What is a "badge"?

We all know about badges for being brave or doing something special like the ones firemen and police officers wear, or the medals runners get when they win a race.

Badges

Badges the Bear has a different kind of badge. It's a special mark on his body: a scar from when he had surgery.

He believes that when you see your badge, you really should be proud. Now go ahead and shout "I'm a hero!" really loud.

An uplifting and empowering book For Little Heroes,

Badges encourages children to remember that scars don't limit what they can do or change who they are.

We began to think about what a scar symbolizes and realized they represent a time that we had to be braver and stronger than what left the scar.  They are symbols of triumph and courage, thus should be embraced and celebrated!

Badges is essentially everything I want to tell my son and those who see his badge. It is also what I wanted to hear as his mother and the words I wanted our loved ones to be able to share with him.  The characters in Badges are beautifully and whimsically drawn. We have badges from several procedures featured in the book: cleft lip/palate, port, and brain surgery. Characters throughout the book have badges on various body parts.

Badges is also interactive and encourages the reader to find Hope the Hummingbird on every spread. "Within this book, please look for Hope with all your heart and mind. As in life, she's always there, just sometimes hard to find."

Message: Hope is always with us....we just have to look for Her.
